Attempted Calm Before the Storm

My parents arrived yesterday. My mom immediately launched into a discussion about weight. I'm not kidding. I drove up, got out of the car, waved hello and heard "Hi Kyra! Now, can you tell that I have lost weight? Look at your dad! Now you, well... anyway...."

I know. I'll never be thin enough. I could be 30 lbs under weight and she would find an area that could use improvement. But I love her. I just buttoned my lip and let her go on - isn't that just darn grown up of me? What was interesting is that my dad got into it too. He's been sick, and has lost a lot of weight because of it. But because he's been so successful (apparently not eating for a month in the hospital is the best diet ever) he's become obsessed with it too. Weird.

They picked me up a concert t-shirt from Celtic Woman that they got to see this past weekend (which I suggested to them, because I love the music. I'm so glad they had such a great time, and I love t-shirts. I think I am addicted to souvenir t-shirts, usually from races though.) Mom was worried because it was a small, and all the mediums were sold out. I said it was fine, but she doubted it. So, I went and put it on, and of course it was perfect - not tight or anything, and mom said "Wow! So a medium would have been too big. I would have never believed it if I hadn't seen it."

I'm not going to analyze that comment. I'm going with the benefit of the doubt. Yes I am. *ahem*

My friend arrives today from Texas. She is the same friend who got me to walk a balance beam and jump from pylon to pylon 50 ft in the air (you can see the pictures here or on my flickr page.) Unfortunately, I have nothing more heinous than my own graduation to inflict upon her to get even. I'll have to think of something. Maybe we should go rock climbing this weekend. There is always the skydiving school a couple of miles away too.... but I think that might end up freaking me out more than her. We have known each other since we were flat-chested little nitwits, and now we're all grown up nitwits. She's flying all the way here just for the weekend, just for my graduation. I think it's amazing how we've become truer friends as we've gotten older, rather than drifting apart like all my other friends and I did.

She is also the only friend I have who is taller than I am. That's right, folks! I get to be SHORT this weekend! HA! Of course, Mr. Savy might be suffering from a severe complex by Monday. She and I are both planning on wearing heels.

I'm trying to not stress about anything today. I have to make a trip into town, and I have to figure out how to iron a graduation gown, and make it to rehearsal. But beyond that, no stress. Yeah, who am I kidding right? I'll probably have many pictures to share, come Monday. And I'll also be announcing the contest winners then too.

So until then, wish me luck, and that I don't trip on the stairs or fall off the stage! Because, lets face it - if it's going to happen to anyone, my money is on it happening to me. ...And if it does happen, lets hope it gets caught on film and I win millions of dollars for the funniest video! (It's all about thinking positive, right?)

As long as your pants don't fall down, you will be fine. ;)
With your mom--when she comes to visit, could you politely ask that certain topics be off limits, specifically weight? My mom has started doing this with my aunt (for reasons I won't get into here) and it seems to be helping her keep her sanity.
Good luck, and have fun with your friend!!

That is so cool that your friend flew all the way out to see you gradaute! Have a great ceremony and weekend.

Your mom stories make me feel more normal about my family stories. So, thanks for sharing them and being honest with us. :)
